First outing of CALEC France during the Planting Languages – Seeds of Success conference, organized by Multilingual Café with the support of Erasmus + on December 2 and 3 in Armentières, France. at the ESSJ. This was the perfect opportunity for our team to present our new digital books platform for schools, sign a partnership with the Association for the Promotion and Advancement of Multilingualism (APAM) and present our new 2022 catalog.
Auteur d’une dizaine de livres sur la psycholinguistique et le bilinguisme, le professeur François Grosjean sort son dernier ouvrage, Life as a Bilingual, aux presses universitaires de Cambridge, dans lequel il reprend les billets qu’il a écrit pour Psychology Today, dans un blog fréquenté par plus de deux millions de lecteurs.
Il est aujourd’hui l’invité de Fabrice Jaumont pour ce nouvel épisode de Révolution bilingue, dans lequel cet éminent universitaire français est devenu lui-même bilingue lorsqu’il a été envoyé dans un internat anglais en Suisse à l’âge de huit ans, puis a déménagé au Royaume-Uni à l’âge de 14 ans. Fort d’une telle expérience, il s’est consacré à la psycholinguistique en France, aux États-Unis et en Suisse. Ancien directeur du Laboratoire de traitement du langage et de la parole, il est professeur émérite de l’Université de Neuchâtel, en Suisse.

Bernard Manuel est président de l’École active bilingue Jeannine Manuel, aujourd’hui située sur trois campus à Paris, Lille et Londres et considérée comme le meilleur lycée de France depuis huit années consécutives, avec un réseau d’anciens élèves influent qui compte des personnalités comme Antony Blinken, secrétaire d’État des États-Unis.
Lui-même bilingue et l’un des premiers élèves de l’école fondée par sa mère, Bernard Manuel a développé une expertise très écoutée de l’éducation bilingue en France et à l’étranger. Il est l’invité de Fabrice Jaumont pour ce nouvel épisode de Révolution Bilingue et nous parle de son parcours de la finance à la gestion d’une école et de sa vision pour l’éducation internationale.

En route pour le congrès et les sphères du pouvoir à Washington pour ce 17e épisode du podcast Révolution bilingue, avec une interview de Bill Rivers, un lobbyiste qui s’efforce de défendre les langues et les intérêts de nombreuses organisations professionnelles, d’associations d’enseignants et de traducteurs auprès des législateurs américains.
Aux Etats-Unis, les langues sont un enjeu stratégique dans les domaines de la défense, du commerce, de la diplomatie, cependant elles ne sont pas toujours très bien mises en valeur. Le lobbyisme pour les langues au niveau fédéral va de pair avec le militantisme des parents et enseignants localement qui souhaitent maintenir leur héritage linguistique ou sortir les enfants d’un monolinguisme qui restreint leurs opportunités. Le rôle que joue Bill Rivers est crucial et permet de réduire le déficit linguistique des Etats-Unis et de rendre nos amis américains plus ouverts aux langues.

Andrew Palmacci recently sat down for a Zoom conversation with authors Agathe Laurent and Sabine Landolt to hear about the making of their new book, Can We Agree to Disagree?, which tackles the challenges, complexities and, yes, struggles of Americans working with the French, and vice-versa, in companies in both countries. Its format is to treat different work-world themes in sections, seasoned with real-life quotes from professionals of both nationalities on the ground. Underlying the authors’ work is the idea of facilitating cross-cultural communication and understanding between professionals from and on both sides of the Atlantic. In this presentation, Fabrice Jaumont gives a dynamic description of the importance of being bilingual/multilingual and the value that it brings to individuals and communities. He describes the many dual language programs that are developing and thriving across the country, gives guidance for starting and sustaining these programs, and answers participants’ questions about the purpose and vitality of these programs. The event was organized by the Coalition of Community-Based Heritage Language Schools, a nationwide initiative, founded in 2012, to support, guide, and promote the interests of community-based heritage language schools and organizations across the United States. This event was held online via Zoom on April 2, 2020.
