Claire Kramsch: Une figure emblématique du multilinguisme

Claire Kramsch, dĂ©sormais professeure Ă©mĂ©rite Ă  l’UC Berkeley, a marquĂ© le domaine de la linguistique appliquĂ©e par son approche sociale, culturelle et stylistique de l’Ă©tude de la langue. Ses publications sont des rĂ©fĂ©rences dans le domaine de l’enseignement des langues.

“After studying German language and literature at the University of Paris-Sorbonne in the 1950s, she emigrated to the United States where she taught German language and literature at M.I.T. and applied linguistics at Cornell University. Claire Kramsch, now a professor emeritus at UC Berkeley, has made a significant impact on the field of applied linguistics through her social, cultural, and stylistic approach to language study. Her publications are references in the field of language education.”

Celebrating Multilingualism: Concours de l’Histoire Plurilingue Featuring Deana Sobel Lederman

The deadline for the 2nd edition of the Concours de l’Histoire Plurilingue is getting close! This contest is open to all children aged 7 to 12 who speak multiple languages at home, providing them an opportunity to showcase their language skills and abilities. You can participate without going through a school by emailing us at concourshistoiresplurilingues@gmail.com for details. Submission Deadline: May 30.

The Association for the Promotion and Advancement of Multilingualism, the contest organizer, aims to value all languages, develop bilingualism and family plurilingualism, and promote a better understanding and appreciation of cultural differences. In partnership with CALEC, they work to support families and foster the harmonious development of multilingual children.

We are extremely proud that Deana Sobel Lederman, the author of the charming children’s books “Noah Henry: A Rainbow Story,” “Masks!,” and “The Sewing Lesson,” is the featured author for this year’s edition. Her books, which have been translated in 14 languages, focus on helping children cope with the challenges brought by the Covid-19 pandemic. With simple, appealing illustrations, they emphasize the importance of masks and the joy of sharing in these difficult times.

The Power of Bilingual Education: A Dialogue with Ellen Bialystok, Fabrice Jaumont, and Hélène Leone

We are thrilled to share a recent thought-provoking discussion involving two of CALEC’s distinguished authors, Ellen Bialystok and Fabrice Jaumont, and our new partner, the Bilingual Canadian School of Paris, represented by its founder Dr. HĂ©lène Leone. This engaging conversation, organized during the Festival du Livre of Paris, aligns with CALEC’s mission of promoting language and cultural excellence, while fostering global understanding and inclusiveness. The event took place in the magnificent Mairie of the 16th arrondissement in Paris.

Ellen Bialystok, a renowned Canadian psychology professor and Distinguished Research Professor at York University in Toronto, is also an Associate Scientist at the Rotman Research Institute at the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care. She has authored the insightful book “Enfants bilingues: familles, Ă©ducation et dĂ©veloppement,” which delves into the cognitive, social, and emotional effects of learning and using foreign languages throughout life, as well as the benefits and challenges of bilingual education in the context of globalization and cultural diversity. HĂ©lène LĂ©one is a dedicated educator with an unwavering commitment to bilingual education and academic excellence. Fabrice Jaumont is an author, researcher, and education advisor, as well as CALEC’s founder.

During this enlightening conversation, the three panelists delved into various aspects of bilingualism and education. The discussion highlighted the cognitive, social, and emotional advantages of learning foreign languages throughout life, emphasizing how bilingualism fosters cognitive flexibility, problem-solving skills, and empathy. The panelists underscored the power of bilingual education in nurturing cognitive development, enriching family life, and bridging cultural gaps.

Quelles langues parlent les livres

CALEC Ă©tait prĂ©sent lors de l’universitĂ© d’Ă©tĂ© de l’association D’une langue Ă  l’autre (DULALA) Ă  Paris, sur un thème central Ă  notre mission, celui des livres multilingues. Pendant deux jours, un public de mĂ©diathĂ©caires et de spĂ©cialistes s’est rĂ©uni Ă  la mĂ©diathèque Françoise Sagan autour de prĂ©sentations d’Ă©diteurs, de traducteurs et d’auteurs pour tenter de rĂ©pondre Ă  la question “Quelles langues parlent les livres ? Les ateliers Ă©taient proposĂ©s par DULALA en partenariat avec l’Agence Quand les Livres Relient et la mĂ©diathèque Sagan. Dulala est membre de l’Alliance pour la lecture. Pour CALEC, c’Ă©tait l’occasion de tenir une table et prĂ©senter un Ă©chantillon de son catalogue de livres multilingues, ainsi que la sortie du livre Marimba, Ă©crit par Patricia Velasco et Christine HĂ©lot, l’actuelle prĂ©sidente de DULALA, et illustrĂ© par Antun Kojton.

Council of Europe recommendations on the importance of plurilingual and intercultural education for democratic culture

At their 1423rd meeting, on 2 February, the Ministers’ Deputies referred the Kavala v. Turkey case to the European Court of Human Rights to determine whether Turkey has failed to fulfil its obligation to implement the Court’s judgment in this case, in line with proceedings provided for under Article 46.4 of the European Convention on Human Rights [more information …].

The Deputies adopted a recommendation to member States on the importance of plurilingual and intercultural education for democratic culture and took note of its explanatory memorandum. This recommendation addresses two developments of concern to the Council of Europe: a tendency on the part of public authorities and civil society to think that proficiency in one additional language is enough; and the notion that proficiency in minority or migrant languages, widespread in today’s increasingly diverse societies, is harmful to societal cohesion.
