CALEC (Center for the Advancement of Languages, Education, and Communities) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering bilingualism, biliteracy, and cross-cultural understanding through education, publishing, and community-building initiatives. CALEC operates two main publishing programs—TBR Books and CALEC Éditions—each of which serves a distinct, yet complementary, purpose in promoting multilingual resources and global awareness.
TBR Books
- Focus: Bilingual and dual-language publications, often designed for educators, families, and community leaders.
- Content:
- Children’s books and picture books featuring side-by-side translations to engage young readers in more than one language.
- Guides and manuals for parents and educators on implementing bilingual education programs (e.g., establishing dual-language schools, best practices for language immersion).
- Research-based texts and scholarly works on bilingualism, language acquisition, and educational methodologies.
- Mission: TBR Books aims to provide approachable, high-quality materials that support “bilingual revolutions” at local and global levels—helping communities embrace the advantages of bilingual education and multilingual literacy.
CALEC Éditions
- Focus: French-language and Francophone-oriented publications, as well as works bridging French with other languages.
- Content:
- Books in French for children, adolescents, and adult learners, including fictional stories and educational resources.
- Titles that explore French-speaking cultures around the world, fostering cultural understanding and appreciation.
- Pedagogical materials and research on teaching French as a second language or implementing bilingual programs with a French component.
- Mission: CALEC Éditions seeks to serve Francophone communities and those learning French, offering materials that celebrate French language and culture while promoting linguistic exchange in multilingual contexts.
In tandem, TBR Books and CALEC Éditions further CALEC’s overarching goal of equipping teachers, parents, and learners with the tools they need to cultivate bilingualism and cultural competence. Through these two publishing programs, CALEC not only supports diverse language initiatives in schools and communities but also contributes to a broader global conversation about the value of multilingual education.
